Today is the day. Duke Nukem: Forever, a game that was first announced way back in 1997, has finally gone gold. It's certainly a big event, if even just to look at it from a historical perspective. The trials and tribulations in the development of DNF has been burned onto the pages of gaming history, and those who were convinced that the game was nothing more than vaporware are, today, having to eat a plate full of crow.
But although one could argue that the overpopulation of the shooter genera with more serious and sullen titles creates an auspicious time for Duke to make his comeback, I would stress caution that we don't heap adulation on the title without having a critical eye. As I wrote previously, this is a very different world than the one Duke is used to and 13 years in gestation is certainly not filed in the "Tried and True Methods of Game Development" section of the developers toolbox. The release, and eventual critique, of Duke Nukem Forever just might become a watershed moment for both The Duke and Gearbox who have placed a hefty bet that bringing DNF to life would do well for both the studio and the series. If anything, it certainly puts them on the map as the company that finally released the most elusive of titles since Daikatana. My fear is simply that DNF and Daikatana may have more in common than complex backstories.
Having played Duke Nukem: Forever I can tell you that the game had a long way to go and hopefully the small delay at the tail end of production was used to shore up some of the issues we experienced during our playthrough. Quite simply, even though Duke himself seems to be the main attraction, no amount of fart and tit jokes can cover up mediocre gameplay. If Gearbox can deliver on that and add in a hefty dose of what makes the Duke Nukem series great then they certainly have a gem on their hands. If not, those who never experienced Duke Nukem 3D might be left asking what all the hoopla was about in the first place.

It really means Duke has a gold penis. Don't you love it.
But yeah. Glad they finally got this locked down. Although I'll only be gameflying it since whatevs. It'll probably be meh but it might have enough dumb fun. Also boobs. Boobs is a major pro.

I want Duke Nukem Forever to be good. I really do. But I'm afraid that, as you said, they're going to focus on the crude humour side of the game more than the gameplay. From what I've seen so far, and having never played Duke Nukem 3D, I'm contemplating skipping Forever entirely and picking up 3D for the "best" Duke Nukem experience.

Hit the nail on the head with the last paragraph.

Well I had a small experience with Duke Nukem 3D and it was alright. I watched the trailers multiple times and I can't get excited for it. Are people going to play this for the gameplay or they just wanna kick ass and chew bubble gum all over again (Like Joseph said the movie "They Live" did it better).

This games gonna suck, but it will sell amazingly and all the games review sites will give it 8+ scores, that is why I like 4pp, always honest :)

Nice article. Most people will buy it just because of the title. I wanna buy it if it has the gameplay...and of course..the humor. The trailers don't really pull me in though, so I'm a bit meh right now.

I think the humor defintely applies to the gamers today.

I always kinda thought Duke Nukem has been dead. Is there really a lot of fans left of this series? How many people are gonna get this game?

I'm looking forward to the turret sequence. I hope Duke makes a dick joke!

I feel bad for Gearbox. They deserve better than this.

The last sentence of what Soulglove said is exactly what the main attraction is for this title to me.
Think of it as you're at a restaurant(Duke Nukem Forever). Half-way through preparing your meal, the cook(Triptych) who was sitting on his thumbs watching Dancing the Stars when he should have been preping your food because today is his last day on the job, ends his shift and leaves as the guy(Gearbox) with the next shift comes in. Now the new guy could try to scavenge your meal that's already 20 minutes late, or he could make it from scratch and take another 30 minutes, or refund you your money and send you on your way(think of it as just letting the franchise die as opposed to actually getting paid for this part). He opts to salvage the meal, it's still warm and isn't half bad and as an added bonus he promises to make dessert fantastic. You take him up his offer because you know his style and have eaten one of his meals before when he worked at a different restaurant(Borderlands).

Maybe this means that the Batman v. Superman movie will eventually get made one day.

Duke Nukem Forever..... DNF (Did Not Finish) thats the feeling i get from this game, as if the development feels the need to just throw this game into the world completely disregarding the modern changes that society has accomplished. All in all, this is gonna fall flat on its face in my opinion.

I don't care if its shit, I'm getting it day one.

I think Duke Nuken would've stayed better unfinished. Now that its finished I'm left with a feeling like "Oh....uh...so the game is coming out.."
13 years, 5 months ago
Hopefully once DNF is out of the way, Gearbox can get started on a Duke game that will actually have the polish it deserves, and wont take 12 years to come out.

I think Gearbox did the best they could to reach dukes full potential in this console generation: However, something about this has me a bit worried. Well see either way

its Duke Nuken....so i will give it the benefit of the doubt. Won't buy.... unless i see it streamed and it rocks.

This game looks poopy but the boobs compensate for it

ill play it, i will give it a chance, but i have a strong doubt in my mind that it will appeal to me. Im not one for toilet humor and nudity, i would take the humor of portal and fallout over what i have seen so far in the trailer.

As an old Duke Nukem fan. I'm not too excited. I stated in forum chatbox several months ago that the only love and memories I have of the Duke Nukem franchise is Nostalgia. That's all it is for me, just a memory of the past. And out of all the times that I said I'm going back to Duke Nukem: Zero Hour or Duke Nukem: Time to Kill(? I may have forgotten the name of the ps2 game.) I never went back to playing them. Something else always gets in the way.
I could say I'm getting DNF but then I'd be lying to myself. So I won't be picking this game up.
I do hope that gamers will enjoy playing DNF. But once again, I'm done with Duke Nukem.

I really don't know why I feel this way, but for some reason I kinda want to see this flop, which is weird since I had such fond memories of Duke Nukem 3-D.

A game with ass and nipples? Just what I've been waiting for

this game is like an ocean and it's release will be the wave...will the build up over the years be enough when this storm finally hits....over the ocean...I lost it....

I don't think I can do a better job of metaphor/simile than Aged Milk with the restaurant, but here's a shot:
Duke Nukem is like sex, and the wait for this game is like being on a 12-year dry spell. Finally you get some hoodrat to agree to it (toss in some dildos and swears for good measure) and the end result is an unsatisfying climax that just leaves you feeling filthy & ashamed, wanting to run off and leave. Assuming you get another shot at the sex, it'll only get better, but you've gotta end the dry spell somehow.

It's crazy, despite this game being a little lacking in terms of overall gameplay and quality (no one expects this to be GoTY) it is one of the few shooters that can make it through the constant slough of FPS's coming out all the time. Maybe not everyone will buy it, but we sure as hell want to play it just to say that we did.

make it like duke 3D and im sold....

For months, I've heard "OMG THE GAME IS GONNA BE SO GOOD, THERE'S NO WAY IT COULD SUCK BAWLLS." But soon enough, I will have the last giggle...oh yes. I shall be preparing a giggle that has been in waiting since 1997, when I was just a wee lass...
