Red Faction: Armageddon, Volition's subterranean followup to the open world Red Faction: Guerrilla, has recently resurfaced with a ton of new gameplay videos of the campaign and the new multiplayer mode "Infestation".

First lets set the scene for the uninformed. Red Faction: Armageddon takes places fifty years after Red Faction: Guerrilla. Sometime after the events of Guerrilla a catastrophic event on the surface of Mars has driven all of the colonists underground. Unfortunately the caves beneath the surface are inhabited by alien creatures who are none too happy with the colonists recent encroachment into their territory. Darius Mason, grandson of Guerilla's Alec Mason, takes it upon himself to eliminate the alien threat.

Red Faction: Armageddon forgoes its predecessor's open world environment and structure for more claustrophobic tunnels and caverns. Players may still visit the surface but only when the story deems it necessary. Players will still be armed with the iconic hammer along with the new arm mounted nano-forge. The device has the ability to rebuild destroyed objects. This allows you to create cover in combat or rebuild bridges for travel.

Unfortunately Armageddon will have no competitive multiplayer. Instead the game will ship with "Infestation Mode". A multiplayer horde mode were four players fight waves of increasingly difficult enemies. Armageddon will also feature the "Ruin Mode" from Guerrilla. In this mode players compete to get the highest score by causing as much destruction as possible in a designated area.

Red Faction: Armageddon will launch for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on May 31st.

Looks kind of bland, but I am staying cautiously optimistic.

My favorite thing about RFG was walking towards the camera away from explosions.... *sigh* no more movie trailer moments....

Turret sequence is the new bullet time. No console game can go without having at least one turret mounting sequence - fountain of originality.

"Red Faction: Armageddon takes places fifty years after the first." Just a quick clarification, it takes place 100 years after the 'first' game, and fifty years after Guerrilla. :)

This new gameplay footage kinda confirms one of my worst fears for the game. For all the cool new destructive weapons you have (i.e. the magnet gun) that you would use to make the environment a weapon against your enemies, you're gonna spend most of the time relying on your standard assault rifle. The enemies seem way too fast, bouncing all over the walls. You can't really set traps like you could in "Guerrilla".

Somewhat unrelated, but I just had a random idea when thinking of the Red Faction universe. Imagine if the next RF game took place on a very large, fully destructible space station above Mars. Also while I'm playing the 'imagine' game, imagine if you could also fly down to the surface from that station with no loading screens. Crash your ship into the station or a building on the ground and storm that building for a mission. I can dream, can't I? As for the footage of Armageddon, it seems like it contains enough running around and shooting stuff, that's for sure.

The player character kinda looks like that douch bag from the soon to be released X-men game, what with all the tribal tats and belts and leather AND the wife beater. In other words, I find him extremely attractive

as for the gameplay, it looks like a single player Gears of War with red replacing gray is the major color. Not sure I want to pay $60 for that
