Today Nintendo had a keynote speech at GDC and here is a rundown of what happened.

First, it should be noted that the speech was streamed live and at the time of this writing, it is being looped here. Iwata gave a good speech about his history, take on current trends (like social and smartphone gaming), the future and fears. It is worth watching the video for that.

Reggie Fils-Aime shared the stage with Iwata and made some announcements in the middle of the speech too.

The video features of the 3DS were detailed. Netflix will be coming to the 3DS, allowing instant streaming of films and television shows to the device. There will also be a service on the device for what they call short-form video, such as 3D trailers and music videos. They also hinted again (previously in an Iwata Asks interview) at 3D video recording capabilities being added in.

3DS will support AT&T’s WiFi hotspot network, to which the 3DS can automatically connect to and receive content pushed to the device.

The eShop, the 3DS’s digital distribution service, was also detailed further, confirming again that it will come in May. It was added that the Virtual Console will have Game Gear and TG-16 games along with the previously announced Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Also mentioned were “3D classics” which are games rereleased in 3D, though few details were given.

They teased a Super Mario game for 3DS to be revealed in full at this year’s E3, which takes place this June. The logo shown for the game, while it was a placeholder, was pointed out to have a tail similar to the Tanooki suit. It was reiterated how 3D supposedly allows for better judgement of where things are when platforming in the Z-axis as well.

A new trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was shown before Iwata wrapped things up.

I get the feeling I'm gonna appreciate Skyward Sword the same way I appreciate Wind Waker. Wonder how the story's gonna be for that one. Usually we get darker stories with adult Link, but looking at that one, who knows? :P

And Game Gear games on the 3DS? Sweet. I can finally finish a game from that handheld without draining 6 AA batteries every few hours.

The world seems empty from the trailers...but they are just trailers.
Cannot wait for this to come out!

Iwata's speech was amazing. Really addressed some of the problems that the industry is going to face in the coming years. He also did the old "take the 3DS out of your jacket pocket" trick, which is always good.

Not sure what I feel about Skyward Sword yet. I never finished Twilight Princess because I grew really sick of the waggle to slash (especially since there was no care to direction or force, just a wrist flick). If the motion sense is accurate enough (which being on the Wii...) I may give it a go, but I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking.

Well I can't wait for E3 now. Also Skyward Sword is shaping up nicely.

Nintendos still got it good. I like the netflix stuff but not much else has been announced from what it seems.
