Hot off the tails of Two Worlds II comes the story of another RPG that no one thought we would ever hear of again. Deep Silver has announced Risen 2: Dark Waters, a sequel to the 2009 RPG developed by Piranha Bytes.

Piranha Bytes will be back on the job for Risen 2 which takes place several years after the ending of the first game and will have an " all-new pirate-based theme." If that's the case I better be fighting a Kraken at some point or I may have to stomp around in a sully mood.

Deep Silver reveals Risen 2™: Dark Waters

Piranha Bytes team to explore uncharted territories with sequel to Risen

LARKSPUR, CA – February 21, 2011 – Deep Silver and Piranha Bytes today officially revealed their new game Risen 2™: Dark Waters, the successor of the popular role-playing game Risen™. With an expanded setting, a fresh story and characters and an all-new technical foundation, Risen 2 will expand the success of the Risen franchise worldwide.

Set several years after the end of Risen, raging titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep.  His quest begins with rumors that the pirates who frequent the southern islands are the only ones who know a way to get rid of the creatures once and for all and end their reign of terror.

With an all-new pirate-based theme, Risen 2: Dark Waters aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales. A third-person role-playing game set in a dark and gritty universe, Risen 2: Dark Waters maintains the most immersive features of the original Risen, with multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions. These choices will serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character. Together with a highly interactive environment and a full day/night-cycle affecting countless aspects of the game world, Risen 2 will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far.

The eagerly-awaited successor of Risen will set sail worldwide for consoles and PC.  For a first immersion into Risen 2: Dark Waters, three illustrations giving a first glimpse of the beautiful new game world can be found on the official game teaser site at www.risen2.com.

I object to your "no one thought we would ever hear of again", Joseph. Remember when Brad said games like Risen and Gothic had a large fanbase that were really into it?

Those of us that played Piranha Bytes games and loved them were expecting this (and were almost certain it was coming, considering the company's work). Risen is what they do. Open world, seamless RPGs is their thing and, as long as the studio is open, I'm pretty sure we'll see more of their fantastic games. Looking forward to this one.

I actually saw this coming as I believe they had announced they were releasing a sequel earlier but gave no details, none the less I enjoyed Risen a lot and I am very excited for this sequel.

dude if the focus is on ships and water....since the screen shots do look like pirate era-ish. Add underwater and brad would have a game he would play no matter what.

A pirate-themed open world RPG could be awesome. Let's hope there's ship sailing and deep-sea diving.

Hopefully the game will help fill the void of Pirate-themed RPGs since Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned got Canceled.

Pirates! I wonder what the equipment slots will be like. Will I be able to equip epic loot such as the "Golden peg-leg of swift running" or the "Gem encrusted hook of booty grabbing" ? Will there be any magic? I've always wondered what a pirate wizard would look like. A pet leveling system where you can train up the most vicious, foul-mouthed parrot known to man? Ship and crew customization? My crew would probably consist of nothing but swashbuckling wenches, but that's just my taste.
