Recently I had the genius idea that I was going to go back and play Blue Dragon. I had started it in the past. I was enjoying alright. It wasn't the most amazing RPG ever but there were some themes I could work with. I like the Japanese dubbing. I was ok with the characters. I think the class system was not too simple as to create some differences between characters.

I had problems with load times and the annoyance of slow down, but heck, for a few hundred cheevos, I'll tough it out. THAT'S IT! I'm playing Blue Dragon as soon as I get back from Mexico...

Wait. Now I remember. That DAMN boss theme. Blue Dragon has a pretty fantastic soundtrack. But two of the crappiest songs on it are the boss theme and the battle theme. It's a huge bummer because those are the ones you'll probably hear the most throughout the course of the game.

I started looking around for the music for this post, and amazingly I saw a lot of positive comments about the songs. About how much they like it and how it was awesome to fight the boss with. I'm calling bullshit. I can't possibly believe you guys liked that song, right?

Lemme know,
David

Even though the song doesn't seem to fit in this type of game, I never had a problem with it. The tempo and beat of the song always got me pumped, making the boss fights rather enjoyable.

Uh what. Song, lyrics, during boss battle? Uh. Its not OH MY GOD TERRRRIBLE, but I would rather have my Final Fantasy 6 and 7s and so on kind of boss battle music.

It could do without the hairband singer.

Honestly, I always enjoyed the boss fights because of this song lol.

I need to get back to Blue Dragon as well though.

Generic as the game itself maybe?

I don't mind it, though I'd prefer Persona 4 over this.

Oh... Yeah, I can see. The music isn't so bad, it feels more like a racing theme song.

But then the singer starts singing... And it feels like it all goes to hell for a moment. There's a certain quality or lack there-of in his voice that makes the delivery a little too flat...

Can't blame you for not liking it. Though if some people enjoy the song. More power to them.

I like this in the same way I like the Burning Rangers theme, but not nearly as much.

I wouldn't have thought it'd take this long for someone to state that Deep Purple member Ian Gillian manned the vocals of this song. I can't say it's incredibly terrible, either. The music has the fast paced tempo found within a fair few boss battle themes, not to mention the cheese factor which doesn't make it all that horrible but a bit fun.

For those that all out hate it with a passion, that's cool. Next time, just make sure you tell Mistwalker not to get the localisation team to loosely translate song lyrics as well as getting a member from a band prominent in the 70s to belt it out (that's probably why Testsubject909 felt like the vocals were flat, all that sex, drugs and rock and roll take their toll).

Almost sounds like Judas Priest - definitely more generic though. I agree, not very good at all (with lyrics) wouldn't be bad as a boss theme I guess with just the instrumental (minus guitar solo.)

I just started this game not too long ago. And I have to say at first I when I heard the boss music I was thinking "Wait, what?" But I have to admit it grew on me. It's not terrible just a decent song. But I can see where some wouldn't like it.

It's awesome in the same way hair-metal bands like Whitesnake are awesome. So bad its great.

sounds like a bad Judas Priest Cover, and unless im sorely misinterpreting the screenshots, then this song doesn't match at all with the game.

This song fuckin rocks! I don't understand how you couldn't like it.

Besides, Xbox's can play music over games? Not seeing the problem here.

I agree Blue Dragon was a bit of an underwhelming game. Personally I bought it hoping to finally get a decent rpg for my next gen console, at the time, also I like Akira Toriyama's designs so it seemed worth it.
The characters and story didn't really appeal to me enough though but the battle system was fine enough to keep going for a bit to see any improvement. But in the end I ended up selling it for some-game-I-don't-remember after only 4-5 hours playtime.

Now after being reminded, the battle music was pretty horrid and that probably pushed me to trading the game in. I'm unsure about the boss music though, it strangely fits with game design.
Just to see if anyone can understand where I'm coming from, think of the Japanese opening for Dragonball Z, with that Head Cha-la theme that always sounded kind of ridiculous (can't blame the US dub version for being so different) when you consider the show is about over-the-top epic battles. Now with Blue Dragon you have this retro sounding rush metal going on while 3 people--mostly children--fight evil with their monster shadows... It's probably nothing as Toriyama had different roles in both projects, it just seemed odd.

Regardless, after playing FFXIII, I feel I was too harsh on poor Blue Dragon. At least it was trying something playfully different.

That song totally doesn't fit a climactic boss battle. Sounds like some crap an indie band would create in twenty minutes, mixed in with a bunch of random solos and a completely out of place singer.

    Agree with you 100%.

Whenever I think of Blue Dragon, I think of Nick going "This is the beginning..."
    I feel your pain.

I thought the music was dumb sounding when I first played the demo, but it's kind of grown on me, I might play this game eventually.

This song is the only memory I have of Blue Dragon. The only GOOD memory.
Out of all the boss theme's I've heard, this one stood out the most to me. You don't expect something like this to play in a jrpg, and that's why it comes across as so jarring.
But I'm personally a fan of the grotesque. Just like how none of my friends liked that movie "The Host" because they thought the music used was just out of place. But to each his own.

You know the song bothers me and I haven't played Blue Dragon, but it's kinda the same thing I originally thought with the music in Persona 3 when I first heard it before the game came out. I love those soundtracks to death now.
