Dante and his cavalcade of Demon slaying skills may soon be coming to a theater near you if Hollywood studio Screen Gems has anything to do with it. They recently reached a deal with Capcom to adapt the game to the big screen. If that name sounds familiar it's because they are the same studio who have created the Resident Evil movies. However you feel about those, they have kept Milla Jovovich relevant and for that my libido owes them a swift welcome.

Kyle Ward is rumored to be working on the script in his off time from working on the Kane & Lynch screenplay.

Personally, even though I do tend to like video game movies when they are done well, I'm not sure just how necessary they are. I like to think that games can be an art form unto themselves without trying to seek some sort of "artistic relevance" on the big screen.

But who am I kidding. I'm still going to go.

Jospeh is on the ball today with posts like usual >.>

Meh, odds are that the movie wouldn't even play in a cruddy area like mine. We never get select theater releases, which is what this movie will probly be.

I'm against this movie from ever being released!!! I don't want a Devil May Cry movie!!! I'll settle for the game because they are basically ARE movies.

As long as it's super close to the game, and the character's actually look like the character's then I'm down. But I don't want to hear no dumb asses who didn't know that it was a video game saying that they love Devil May Cry (just saying) :)

Personally I think this movie will run into the same problems Prince of Persia did. The story of DMC is largely one that Dante undertakes alone. Even with the inclusion of other characters, such as Virgil, Trish, and some bosses that are capable of speech, most of the game is spent in solitude and silence slaughtering shrieking demons (Hey, unintentional alliteration!). Hardly engaging movie material. It works as a game because the connectivity is established through the player's control of Dante. If characters are added in for the sake having springboards for dialogue, then they damn well better have depth, move the main plot forward, and have to experience their own personal journey as well. That's of course if you want some other dude who is exclusive to the movies stealing the spotlight from Dante. Prince of Persia in my mind would never have to deal with the other bullshit characters that were rejects from Pirates of the Caribbean. In fact, he doesn't need them- he should be capable of handling a horde of foes on his own. Dante doesn't strike me as the type to tolerate cling-on sidekicks either, not to mention in his games he is probably even more capable than Prince.
    Rant over.

Japan made an anime series off of Devil May Cry with Dante etc and it was pretty decent. So I think it is possible that they could make a decent story and characters out of the series itself to be at least entertaining. It just comes down to the talent of the creators themselves.

-the anime was pretty bad, i hope this doesn't follow the same path
-talking about movies based on games i just saw Max Payne for the first time and pretty cool and good

I can't say since I've only seen a small amount of it but it did prove possible to draw a story from the series.

I just hope the movie won't take itself too seriously and there is lots of over-the-top scenes like in the cutscenes in the games.
I also hope they'll use the cocky youthful Dante, and not the one from DMC2 or the new "DmC".

lol they're probably gunna try to be clever and use the new "DmC" Dante so when they screw up they can say "but it really wasn't ruining DMC, it was based on the crappy reboot so we just ruined the ruined reboot"

Well, the DMC anime was crap, but I knew what was getting; a game-to-anime series is usually for hardcore fans that want to see their favorite characters brought to life in a fresh medium - that's motivation enough. As long as the live-action movie is not being done by a Japanese studio, I think it's safe to say that the film will only graze hokey-ness.

I would definitely consider going to see this but it would not be higher up on my list of priorities.

The anime series of Devil May Cry was pretty good. As long as they don't turn it into a live action movie, I think it would be great.
