Final Fantasy Thirteen Two

I awoke this morning to some really shocking news. Not only did Square-Enix pull back the curtain and show off a new, beautiful, Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer, it completely renamed the previously named, "Final Fantasy Agito XIII" and announced a direct sequel to my most disappointing game of 2010, Final Fantasy XIII; aptly titled: Final Fantasy XIII-2. Check it out:

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (**UPDATED - NOW IN ENGLISH**)

Following in the footsteps of Final Fantasy X-2, XIII-2 will stand as the second direct sequel to a previously established Final Fantasy game (not including Dirge of Cerberus). What I find to be even more shocking is that Square-Enix claims that the game will be hitting store shelves in the U.S. next Winter (2011)! Think about it folks, we are potentially going to get 2 Final Fantasy XIII games before Final Fantasy Versus XIII releases! On the bright side, I see this as a chance to redeem itself in my eyes if they redesign FFXIII's battle system from the ground up and scrap the painfully dull linear structure of the original. Of course, with such a short turnaround, I can't help but worry.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII

In what I consider to be far better news than XIII-2's announcement is the best trailer for Versus XIII to date. Details concerning a release date are still absent but we finally have 6+ minute trailer of the premier PS3 title. The trailer is packed with beautiful CG cinematics and a hefty dose of gameplay that shows off it's action-RPG mechanics and diverse environments.

Juxtaposing the dark, dimly lit city scapes of previous trailers with the gorgeous outdoor (open world?) environments seems to hint at a much more satisfying structure this time around. In a surprising but strangely satisfying move, the game seems to be building a final fantasy universe based off of reality. The world and the civilizations that populate it seem to resemble earth while all of the traditional Final Fantasy staples are still present. It's a bold change but a promising one in my book.

Final Fantasy Type-0

There isn't much to say about the newly renamed: Final Fantasy Type-0 (formerly known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII) except that this seems to be a promising entry in the series on a handheld. One of the first real original entries on a handheld since Final Fantasy Crisis Core. The gameplay is once again rooted in action RPG tropes and the story seems to center around schools of Magic and a conflict that spans nations. These themes were present in the controversial FFVIII and FFXII but I considered them to be some of the more interesting and mature stories in the series.

I'm mostly hyped about these, but I'm not sure if I want to add another FF13 to my already full gaming plate this year. >.<

I'm finding it difficult to get excited for or even trust what Square-Enix is showing off when there are little or no details behind it. Especially after the huge disappointment that was Final Fantasy 13.

Which is a shame because Versus 13's gameplay looks really cool, lets just hope the rest of the game is as well.

A FFXIII-2? Didn't see that coming at all. It's so weird that before we'd get one Final Fantasy every couple of years, now we're getting three more coming out so soon after two other Final Fantasies (13 and 14).

Versus 13 looks to have a pretty interesting setting to it. I'm still hesitant to get excited about the gameplay since so far that I've seen, it looks like Kingdom Hearts. I'll wait and see how it turns out before I officially allow myself to get excited for the game.

Ah I didn't expect type 0 to simply be Agito. But let us hope for 13-2

Loving the look of Versus. The look of the city and the cars and so much is gorgeous. It reminds me of real cities, real places. I like the character design too! Even though it looks like so many of the main characters carry that common "bishounen" look about them, it actually has what appears to be middle-aged men. Not super young, not super old, but in between. By the gods! Ah, over reaction. And the suits were very spiffy, a different look from the impossibly decorated clothes that are in so many of the FF games, or even just Nomura games. Nice, simple suits. I like that. I like that a lot.

I just kind of worry that the gameplay might turn into a bit too much of a button masher. I don't want that. KH2 was fun, but so much was lost because many saw less need for magic and special abilities. The gameplay reminds me of some of the gameplay from KH2, especially the drive forms. However, certain things that happened(teleporting, close combat, and far combat) should give it a bit more complexity than "press x quickly."

The city didn't look as though you could go into any of the buildings. That makes me very sad. I hope it does. Thinking of the first KH game, I remember that you could go to all the worlds and it had an open world feel to it. I mean, I could go to these places, I might see things in the distance, and it would occur to me, "Dang, can't get that just yet." So I'd leave, travel, gain more abilities, and then return. I'd be able to get it! Start out rather weak, and by gaining abilities that are in some cases optional, I can gain even more. I really want Versus 13 to have something like that. Hidden treasures, extra things that require what you don't have just yet, things that need a side quest of sorts to even reach. I want that.

The landscapes of the wilds remind me of FF XII. I rather hope that there aren't a massive amount of loading screens. Hrm...well. That trailer was great. Music, loved it. Hoping that now there'll be more info trickling out faster.

XIII-2. Don't know what to think. I think...that I want it to turn open world like X-2 though. I love the system of X-2, just as much as I loved combat in X. I don't know what they're going to do for a new story, and I'm just hoping that it is better than X-2's story was. That trailer...just seems like a big place holder. Full of questions, and literally no answers.

Coming from an amazing experience that was Final Fantasy XII to be disappointed in Final Fantasy XIII, I'm willing to give FF XIII-2 a shot. I thought the theme of discrimination was not fleshed out as much as S-E should have.
Final Fantasy Type-0 look is looking great. I read on Andriasang that the game is coming in 2 UMD's. I think they're gonna pull a Twighlight Princess on us and have it be a launch PSP2 title.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII...wow. The CG alone blew me away. I honestly believe, that if Square follows through with a mature story, great gameplay and a fleshed out world; we'll be looking at the true evolution of what JRPG's should be. Am I getting my hopes up? Sure, but some say that I'm a dreamer.

I'm much more in favour of a game like FF13-2 existing than I was with FF10-2. With X-2 We didn't need it, X ended well and it played well, there was no reason for us to come back to that world and I felt it was would have been MUCH better left alone (especially as FF10 provided me with one of my favourite endings of all time, X-2 had to come along and ruin the whole show).

But FF13-2 is in a totally different position. It was a game where I felt they were on to something but made mistakes in terms of things like plot, pacing and character development. That's why I'm *somewhat* excited to see what XIII-2 can bring to the table.

But WHY in the tarnation is Motomu Toriyama back as Director & Scenario Writer?! I don't know if you have taken a peek at the games he has directed through his career, but, he hasn't really directed a game which can unanimously be considered "Brilliant" both critically or through fans. They all kinda have their own unique, nifty systems/mechanics, but the end product is always kinda left unsatisfactory.

thats a lot of final fantasy...i really hope XIII-2 is more traditional final fantasy and not more of the shitty linear original XIII. I mean i like Lightnings character and versus XIII looks good too. Just hope square doesnt end up fucking us over, giving square one more shot at redeeming themselves.

I have to say I'm not really impressed with Versus 13 right now. Sure it looks nice, and has wonderful set pieces but if the final product stays this way that's all it may have. Pulling as heavily from the Kingdom Hearts engine as it is, the exploration might not be as open as one would hope, and it likes like VS 13 is falling into a "room full of dudes, kill them, go on to next room full of dudes" cycle of game play hiding behind big set pieces and a long development time. The story seems interesting, but the game play looks monotonous and rather lack luster at this point. After FF13 the last thing I think people want is another point A to point B game world with "mash X a lot" on top of it.

Type-0 on the other hand looks pretty good. It seems to have factions and maybe even classes which I enjoy a lot. Out of the three I'm more pumped for this one.

I'm glad they changed the name from Agito to Type-0. However, with a title like Versus XIII, I'm suprised THAT wasn't the one to get the name change. Whatever, still looking forward to the development of all these games.

I still think they should just drop XIII from Versus'a title.

That aside, it still looks amazing and will be a day one purchase for me.

    Dear Squenix,

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING.

    That is all.

PS. Versus XIII is still the most promising of the lot.
