4playerpodcastitunes2010 is behind us and it is finally time to get back to business. For the first time in several weeks, we actually sit down to discuss what we have been playing! We have a lot of catching up to do thanks to the 3 weeks of various award and preview shows so impressions run a little long this week. In fact... they run so long, that other regular segments like "chatter 4 the week" have to sit this one out. In a rather surprising turn of events, we all spent a lot of time playing games on our laundry lists. We talk about everything from Machinarium to Batman Arkham Asylum and Nick even blows minds when he reveals that he finally started playing Dragon Age Origins! Join us as we kick off 2011 with a bang!

    Great show.

I halfway disagree with Brad on Nier concerning the side quests. Granted, most, if not all of the side quests in the game are indeed crappy Fetch quests, they're not really all that difficult in the first place. Sure, the actual rewards are shitty, but I feel the character interactions and backstory while performing the quest and even just as you finish it make it all the more worth it. Some of the best dialog and experiences in the game are during a lot of these sidequests. I.E. I remember the overall experience I gained from one of the quests, The Belated Letter, blew my mind. At the time you're not too sure of how the world works and then that "twist" happens and get knocked on your ass unexpectedly.

Also, another point I completely disagree on: simply stopping the game after the second ending and youtubing the last two endings. I'd argue that there is no way you can have that same phenomenal experience the developers wanted you to have by simply watching the rest of what the game offers. Frankly, that experience will not be as good as it was meant to be by submitting to that. I'd put money down that if you had no idea what was going to happen at that last ending and actually went through it, opinions and feelings towards the game will change, if not, heighten. Sure, the playthroughs themselves don't change at all after the first two, but that end result makes it completely worth it, I believe. I wish they could've done much more for those last two playthroughs to help drive people into playing through them them. I love Nier for what the developers have done and risked throughout, but unfortunately it will never get the respect and recognition it deserves despite its problems.

When Nick mentioned he's playing DA:O, my mind was blown. And hopefully when he finishes it people will finally STFU about him not playing it.

I'm about an hour through this podcast. I did smile when I heard about the hermaphrodite part. And it reminds me that when I went to the States a weekend ago, I picked up Nier at Gamestop since it's cheaper than in Canada. I still have yet to play it but I look forward to it since I hear really good things about it.
