The inevitable has been...postponed.  The purported World of Warcraft movie is currently on hold while director Sam Raimi get's busy swimming through the coffers of the Disney Company.

Word around is that the ex-Evil Dead director will be working on a reboot of The Wizard of Oz. This, in itself, is actually some good news. I was afraid that they would be giving this project to Tim Burton, and we would be stuck with a creepy Dorthy played by Johnny Depp in drag.  Because it is now science fact that Tim Burton can no longer make a movie unless it stars Johnny Depp being creepy.

Remember when Burton made good movies? Think hard...it was a long time ago.

In any case, a script is currently in the works for the WoW film, I'm sure slowly being keyed up as we speak.  Hopefully they keep Raimi on the project since his involvement would probably be the only thing between a decent film and a steaming pile of shit not worth cleaning your arse with.

To leave a more constructive comment, would it be too big of a jump to say that the success of this film may determine the viability of video game IPs being translated to film in the future? The video game film "genre" isn't exactly one filled with hits which has already led to the Halo film being canned and the Bioshock film being put on hold indefinitely. No film studio in their right mind would or should be willing to fork over hundreds of millions of dollars (Bioshock's proposed budget was at around $200 million the last I checked) for a video game film when the market has been tainted with such stinkers in the past.

But then there's WoW. Its a game that most people know of, even if they don't play it. More so than any of the other game based films in the past, with the possible exception of Super Mario Brothers, its a legitimate pop culture phenomena that spans to more areas than just gamers. So is it fair to say that the future of this film "genre" rests on this film's shoulders? If any video game IP can convince investors and studio executives that their money will be returned in sales, I think WoW would be it.

I hope this project makes it over this hump. Not because I'm particularly excited to see it, but because the legitimacy of this film "genre" depends on it. Honestly, if done right, I would love a Bioshock film. Rapture on the big screen would be pretty amazing IMO (you know they won't be able to resist 3D fish), but we may not get to see it if WoW gets canned or tanks on release.

WoW might be the IP to give hope to others, but only if the studios are willing to trust the fungus and jump. Let's see what they choose to do.

As for the Wizard of Oz, if Burton had a hold of that, Johnny Depp would have had to pull an Eddie Murphy and play every part (you all know in your heart its true). I'd like to see what Rami does with that world.

The expansion is coming out in about 2 months so I'd say by the time the WoW movie is released most of the players will be actually willing to leave their computer chairs, but not really before that. I have had friends addicted to that game pretty hardcore since 2004. Also I think the general public would only be willing to see a WoW themed movie to make fun of it and its fans.

Also, Tim Burton made Big Fish not too long ago, that movie is good in my opinion. Anything after that though I can't really comment on, I never saw the remakes of Willy Wonka or Alive in Wonderland or anything. Though I did hear Corpse Bride was decent.

Oh my god Joseph, you managed to pick a picture from my FAVORITE scene in any of the Evil dead movies. It's just so horribly out of place it makes my giggle with fucking DELIGHT.

Also, the WoW movies is gonna be poop, no matter who is directing it.

No Bruce Cambell should play as an undead and as one he should be "Bad Ash" I mean c'mon that movie was made for that role. And i could see Johnny Depp as a blood elf or troll and a mumchin as a gnome i mean c'mon. Im still wondering how you can even make WoW into a movie the whole games about traveling the world and defending your faction.
