It has been a ridiculous year so far guys and I am already up to my neck in games that I need to play in the near future.  It's obvious what games are going to be in the running for Game of the Year so far so my question is instead, what are the underdogs of the year so far?  What games have come out this year that you feel are underrated, underappreciated, and deserving of some attention when all the gaming sites on the net, ourselves included, do their end of the year awards?  Here are a couple of mine:

Bayonetta is my GOTY so far but doubt it's going to get any awards. And i really liked Yakuza 3 too

Alpha Protocol is honestly one of the best games that i have played this year, very underrated, underappreciated and definitely deserves more attention.

I wouldn't Put Yakuza 3 on there, it wasn't bad but I'd say it's the weakest of the 3 games. I'm actually struggling to think of any underdogs I'd nominate for GOTY this year, but then again I've played a lot less games this year than the last few years before.

Guess I'll have a think and come back to this post later.

Alpha Protocol. It deserved alot of the lower scores because it was a technical mess but it was a great idea.

Nier. I don't even have to think about this one. One of the best gaming experiences I've had in years.

Completed both of those games and they were brilliant, it is a shame they were pretty off the grid, they didn't receive a lot of marketing. I have to say i enjoyed Singularity best, reminded me of bioshock, and Metro 2033 was just creepy and claustrophobic and has a great atmosphere.

Id probably pick those two as well as they are the only two underdogs iv played this year, took a miss on Nier, didn't seem like my kinda thing.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on Metro 2033, a truly great game; but I think we all know that the best game of this year, neigh, this console generation, is Tales of Agarest War.

"Nier" surprised the hell out of me. I don't expect to see it on a lot of 'end of year' lists but it's definitely gonna hold a spot on mine.

For me it was Nier. Omg what a great game!!! When I saw Brad played it. I fell in love in first sight. Great story, great characters and great soundtrack.

Wee bit gutted this wasn't titled "Stand up for the littleguys."

    Sad.

Personally, I really loved the game, Resonance of Fate. Unfortunately, the game probably didn't see much hype because of having a release date relatively close to Final Fantasy XIII. Although the game suffers a lot of problems (ex. story kind of falls flat in the end and unforgiving combat), I thought that the interesting battle system and interesting cutscenes allowed me to enjoy the game from beginning to end.

Personally I really liked Sakura Wars: So Long My Love and No More Heroes 2. I also liked Nier and Red Steel 2. Wii games seem to get lost in the shuffle alot.

I'd have to Agree with Metro 2033. It was a truly immersive experience; The graphics were absolutely brilliant, Possibly a new Benchmark to break the Crysis grip for the PC? Nonetheless, It was a great game, the only problem, Too short. =[ But the greatest things aren't meant to last i suppose.

I never realized this year was so big on the 'underdog' games as well. And for the most part, they're a lot better than a lot of the AAA titles that have come out. Metro 2033 is probably the best shooter experience I've had all year. Nier and Alpha Protocol are my best JRPG and westernRPG experiences, respectively. Yes, Alpha Protocol beats out Mass Effect 2, for me at least.

I just really loved all three of those games, each had their flaws, but each had things about them that made them shine above everything else I have played. Metro 2033 had amazing atmosphere, immersion. Nier, amazing story. Alpha Protocol, is a bit varied in it's strengths (and weaknesses) but it had a combination of great interaction with the story and really fun gameplay.

There are still plenty of these 'underdog' titles for me to get to and I await them eagerly.
