You might remember my initial devastation upon hearing that the next Tomb Raider game was going to be well... this. I was upset as I felt I was the last person on the planet who still really enjoyed Tomb Raider (especially the Crystal Dynamics games). Now that I've seen this trailer I have two things on my mind.

1. This actually looks really cool. It may not be traditional Tomb Raider, but it does look like it might be a really fun co-op game. With its isometric camera, the combat will no doubt have a twin-stick-shooter like control scheme -- which to be honest, seems like even Crystal Dynamics would have a hard time fucking up. The game looks kind of like Diablo with platforming and puzzles. Sign me up!

2. HOLY SHIT THIS GAME IS FROM CRYSTAL DYNAMICS!!! THIS ENGINE COULD BE USED TO MAKE A NEW ISOMETRIC LEGACY OF KAIN GAME LIKE BLOOD OMEN 1!!! WHAT IS BLOOD OMEN??? STUPID!!! IT'S LIKE OLD SCHOOL ZELDA BUT WITH LOTS AND LOTS OF BLOOD AND A BADASS STORY!!! YOU DON'T GET IT... THIS COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN. HELL, I'D SAY ITS LIKELY TO HAPPEN!!! IN FACT, WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST DO THE LEGACY OF GAIN GAME FIRST??!!??? OHHHHH SHIIIIIIIIT!!!!

A new or remake of Blood Omen with this engine would be awesome. The Legacy of Kain series is among my favorite games of all time. All hail Simon Templeman!

Oh damn! That's some hot Diablo top-down camera co-op action. I could get in on this.

Honestly, I would prefer that they did another game along the vein of Legend/Underworld, but I can appreciate them trying something new. I'll be keeping an eye out for this... coolness.

I agree. Most of the time a Lara Croft game comes out and I don't pay too much attention, maybe play the demo and be underwhelmed, but this could spark some interest amongst gamers. It's definitely made me more interested in the game and has shown some potential.

The trailer is certainly interesting. I've never been into the whole Lara Croft Universe, mainly because of the puzzles and platforming, but this new game although being completely different, is still trying to keep some things from the original series. I think this new take would excite people like me who have never touch a Tomb Raider game before.

So is Brenden Fraiser in this game? (It had to be done)

That out of the way this looks pretty cool. I played Tomb Raider 3 back in the day but sadly haven't played any since. I don't know if this one is the one I should come back to the series with, but I like the way it looks so far.

As Lara says at the end of the trailer, "That was unexpected." I didn't really expect to see anything about Tomb Raider any time soon. It does certainly look interesting, though.

Brad's notion about a Legacy of Kain game is what really intrigues me. New Kain? Yes please.

I think this could be a nice change for TR. Although I don't care for the other guy. Are there no other characters in the SERIES that could take his place?

It also has a striking resemblance to Trine. With physics and character use.

I hope a LoK game is made in the future. It is only one of the best series ever made.

I dont know how to feel about this one after the newest Tomb Raider games. I think what they should do is open the world up a little bit and make it more of an adventure; like oh wow there's a dungeon here lets go explore it. Have side quests more story. They are focusing a little bit too much on the Lara Croft and not enough on the tomb raiding aspects of the game.

I suppose since they removed "Tomb Raider" from the title it doesn't seem like they're ditching the original series, and it definitely looks like something fresh to try out.

Interesting twist especially how the rest of the series played out. Either way, this could be a good change for the series and other games in general if done right.

Looks good, and a new Legacy of Kain game from Crystal Dynamics would be great, games like LoK are rare to see these days. Crystal Dynamics needs to bring it back from the ashes in a whole new way.

eh, i appreciate them trying something new on this series, but honestly i cant hold respect for a game thats well past its 10th edition. same applies to final fantasy, but at least their saying "hey, we can do something besides another weird prince of persia esque platformer with guns and a british woman with a freaking counter on her chest"

This actually looks like a fun and interesting spin on the Tomb Raider series, but I'm still waiting for my Legacy of Kain, or Soul Reaver sequel; a game with a story that I really cared about, unlike Tomb Raider. I'm sad that I sold my copy of Defiance. :(

I never really played the other tomb raiders but this looks fun, the view style kinda reminds me of the game play footage that is out for diablo 3 at the moment. Either way it should be interesting especially with co-op.

Echoing what everyone has said, it's deeply reminiscent of the Diablo 3 engine, given the particular camera angle, the manner of attacks, and so on and so forth. That being said, I can't rip on Crystal Dynamics for going down this path because it would appear they're taking the tasty tidbits of such an engine and modifying it to fit a Tombraider world - a lofty goal, but one they've appeared to accomplish.

As for Legacy of Kain - I whole-heartedly support such sentiments. It's basically a polished, graphic overhaul of what the original was, so why not? Here's hoping we'll see something along those lines eventually.

I'm a big fan of the Tomb Raider series and this does look good but I don't really like the vertical camera view. I'm used to the camera being behind Lara but oh well, I will of course still give this game a try. The co-op seems like it could be a lot of fun. The fighting seems like it will be more interesting instead of the usual shooting at a target or two and an occasional kick in the face.

I hope since there is now a co-op, there will be more of an open-world type of environment. It would be awesome to explore the area where you can find secret areas to make playing the game more interesting. I wonder if the story is following any of the previous games or if it's different entirely. Either way, I am looking forward to this.

I Heard sure that they are still going to make tomb raider games along with this new series. And if that is so, then I welcome this, because it looks very interesting. And if it turns out to be bad, then at least they will still have the tomb raider series to fall back on.

I just hope that they don't have those moments where you are confused and don't know where the hell to go that are present in some tomb raider games.

This looks more interesting than what I envisioned when I heard about it, but I think I'll pass. I don't really have any friends I can play co-op with without it being a big hassle to arrange or convince them that an isometric Tomb Raider might be worthwhile.

Also, it's stupid, because this game could've just as easily not included Lara Croft, but I know I can't look past the fact it's not what I want in a Tomb Raider game.

This game is the embodiment of why I think this franchise is moving in the wrong direction. I didn't fall in love with Lara in 1996, I feel in love with Tomb Raider. As in the locales and core gameplay mechanics.

I mean no disrespect to anyone looking forward to this game, but I just find it really aggravating when a developer constantly screws around with a preexisting IP when they might as well just make a new one. I think they're relying to much on her character at this point.

    First of all:
NO Brad, you are not the last person on the planet who really enjoys Tomb Raider. I love Tomb Raider, I'm a die-hard Tomb Raider fan who's been there through the good and the bad and have been totally in love since the very beginning. There's been a lot of Tomb Raider Hate going on these days it seems, so I'm glad to see I'm no alone in my enjoyment of Tomb Raider :)

    Second of all:
When I first saw this it kind of made me sad too. But this isn't an actual "full" Tomb Raider game and that makes me a bit more relieved. I'm all for trying something new, and the fact that this is coop is really exciting since it's my favorite series EVAR!!! So I'm interested to see how well it gets pulled off. I just hope they don't get any really crazy ideas for the next "full" installment. I really like the path they were going down for that. But as a shoot-off? Bring it on! :D

    Lastly:
I LOVE Legacy of Kain! It would be killer if they made an addition to that amazing series! :D

I am a huge fan of the tomb raider series, Underworld was a fantastic game and I enjoyed every second.
When I first heard about this game I really did not like the idea.

But looking at the trailer, and trying to look at this as an independant game, and not the traditional tomb raider game that I love so much, It does look very interesting and compelling.

I will be aproaching it with an open mind and see how it turns out.

I thought this looked pretty baller right from the start.

I trust Crystal D with this, hell, I enjoyed Tomb Raider Underworld even though it felt kind of unfinished. I trust Crystal D with almost anything, that studio seem to be full of passionate people who make games with the right intentions. Too bad they don't always get to finish their games or have a long enough development period or budget.

This is something I liked about S-E aquiring Eidos. They supposedly delayed a whole bunch of Eidos games so they would come out a bit better with more content. I'm not sure if this is true but judging by Just Cause 2 and Nier, those are some pretty fucking quality games despite some flaws and they are FULL of content.

  • Avatar
    InconsiderateDickhead

And uh yeah, Nier was obviously not an Eidos game. But it has a ton of content, especially the ng+ and alternate endings. Ng+ in Nier is amazing, new voice acting, cutscenes etc. The story gets fleshed out like hell in ng+ and everything makes much more sense.

Two things right off the bat:

    1. To me the other character looks like he came out of the Mortal Kombat universe, which is very cool in my opinion.

    2. This is the way that games like X-men Legends, Ultimate Alliance, etc. should have played.

That said, it does actually look like something I'd pick up and play over and over.

Even though this looks like a decent and fun game to play, you have to question why this game is being made and where the series could go.

It looks like Crystal Dynamics is trying to make a game that appeals to a lot of people, the Tomb Raider series has a now dwindling audience and a lot of gamers still think the Tomb Raider games don't have any substance.

Another problem is many present day gamers were babies and young kids when the Tomb Raider games were coming out, they either heard all the rambling of Lara Crofts boobs or they were too young to actually play and enjoy the original games.

So instead of making a game that has this old preconceived idea of "this game is about explosions, jumping, and titties", they try making a nice looking, polished co-op game. But then you have to ask "why have Lara Croft in this at all?".

At this point Lara Croft is a fallen game mascot, everybody knows who she is and the games she's in but because of her large chest people never could take her seriously and many still see her as a gimmick. But to the hardcore tomb raider fans she resembles a series they enjoy, the fans enjoy the gameplay of the tomb raiders much more than Lara Croft but she still represents a time and age of new, different platformers.

Crystal Dynamics wouldn't lose anything from putting Lara in this game, and since this a simpler game than Tomb Raider, people might not care how simple of a character Lara Croft is.

As much as this isn't like some of the old tomb raider games, i think it this game could be a fresh take on the series. If when this game comes out it is liked by the majority of the older tomb raider fans then i would hope they would continue to make more games like this. But what i think is going to happen is that all of the old Tomb Raider fans will hate this game just based on the fact that it isn't of the traditional Tomb Raider fashion. If this happends then this good idea will just be thrown in the trash just because it wasn't well recieved, which i think is stupid. But overall i just hope that this take on the series is take well so that i could see new ideas for the Tomb Raider series. This is just my opinion.
