I've made similar arguments about Bayonetta's character in the past, just not in so many words. While I don't agree with all of his thoughts on the character design, I do share similar opinions on his conclusion. It is also interesting that the character designer for Bayonetta is in fact female.

This guy makes a lot of good points,
I would have to agree that its very hard to name a character, especially a female character that..god i cant word this properly, ****

You know how you have characters whos actions during gameplay directly conflicts to the character's personality, the obvious example that has been said a thousand times is how Niko Bellic kills a thousand people yet is portrayed to just want to settle down or some shit.

    ****continued
I can name, Two characters that dont abide to this, Bayonetta and Kratos, Kratos, to a lesser extent as there was that stuff where he tries to kill himself, Kratos' move set is as brutal as they are in the cut-scenes everytihng he does in the God of War series is for revenge, the plot rarely deviates from the main goal which will no doubt conclude with Kratos killing Zeus at the end of God of War 3.

Bayonetta is the same in this regard, everything she does is sexualised, but not in a generic "Miranda's ass is super close to the camera this is not suspect at all" kind of way, im sure you all know this already so il just end it with Bayonetta is the best original character ive seen in a long time, looking forward to the inevitable Bayonetta 2. :)

He brought up some interesting points to mind and adressed the misconceptions people may have towards her. I hadn't really thought too much into the characterisation of female video game characters on different sides of the spectrum, from 'tough on the outside, girly on the inside' or 'ice queen', I've thought about it before, but not in so much analysis, while this definitely does not apply to every female video game character at all(e.g Alyx Vance), I agree that Bayonetta does take it above and beyond for some of the points he brought up.

Only thing I do not agree with is how he says her breast are over-sized.

Her breast are not ridiculously giant, nor are they to small. (Mosquito Bite Boobs)
    They're just right.

^^^ She still has larger than normal breasts, but the muscles behind the breasts elevate them and keep them real high up, giving them the appearence that they are huge. It happens to ladies, sometimes.

    Cool find though, Brad.

I watched overthinker a while back. He always brings up good points but sometimes they aren't always completely true.

With Bayonetta, well, like he said, its not that she doesn't want it, she just doubts your the one who would do it. The jack hammer teddy bear bit cracks me up. the mental image of that will never go away.

If Bayonetta had giant breasts then i need my eyes tested. But all in all he made some good points and it was interesting to lisen to his analysis.

Really interesting watch and I agree with most of them. Though I would to point out that he really looked past Bayonetta's glasses, which I believed to be a really important aspect of Bayonetta. Glasses have always been a sign of intelligence, and I think its important that they gave her glasses to show that not only is she a strong woman, but also intelligent and makes the whole package of the "independant/strong woman". Not to mention they look damn sexy on her.

I also love how he describes DoA girls..."womanly body with sad precious moments cherubim heads attached" hahahaha

Honestly, I think that Bayonetta being so exaggerated and over the top makes it harder to appreciate her as a stand out character, it kind of throws balance out the window in order to make a character different from the 2-stock female archetypes that Bob mentioned.

It suggests that in order to break from the norm of generic female character design you have to make something as ridiculous as Bayonetta. If that's the case, I'd rather stick with the generic female archetypes. It honestly wasn't an issue about being emasculated, I was just cringing and face-palming at every other line, the over-sexualization really just broke the character for me.

As for similar, strong non-archetypical characters I feel like Ada Wong from the Resident Evil series stands out because while she at first appears to be the ice-queen that Bob mentions it soon turns out that her personality is more akin to Bayonetta's, albeit a little less ridiculous. This is clear in just about every RE4 cutscene in which she is present, she appears as that "I'm probably too much for you to handle character" without making you want to stab yourself in the ears at every line.

I always enjoy listening to people's analysis of designs and character designs in general. It gives me insight that I probably would have never would have considered on my own. Great post.
