hideokojimaKojima and Itagaki... best of friends?

The following clips are taken from the PlayStation version of the recently fan translated adventure game Policenauts -- a Hideo Kojima game released several years before Metal Gear Solid. This spiritual successor to Snatcher was never released in the US, but the translation is almost word-for-word faithful to the original. People who have played the Japanese version of the game have confirmed that this chauvinistic dialogue (and perverted actions) was indeed in the original version of the game prior to translation.  Apparently in the Saturn version of the game you could even molest young ladies during interrogations by selecting and "touching" various private parts in order to get information.  That's crossing way over the line into some pretty sick fucking territory.  The worst is how the main character laughs off the molestation.

I'm sure this treatment of women might have been common in Japanese games a decade and a half ago, but these are the kind of things that get removed when brought over to this country.  It's just sad because everything else about this game is pretty fucking awesome.

A word of warning: The following videos can be pretty disturbing and might change the way you think about Kojima.  I guess we have no way of confirming if this dialogue was written by the man himself; but he was responsible for the story and the characterizations in this game.

Here is the neoGAF thread with some discussion of the game and offensive content.

What do you think? Is this shit unforgivable? Kojima has since gone on to create some of the very best female video game character ever (The Boss, Meryl, Eva). Has he changed?

On that forum someone told everybody to stop 'nitpicking over bullshit'. Hello dumbass, can I put a bat to your face?

It's nice to see a guy disgusted over it, for various reasons.

As a woman I'm offended. As a gamer I'm even more so, because Kojima was definetly a favorite of mine, creativity-wise. There's always a stigma that women have in the video game industry. It will always be there. It's so ingrained that it is literally irreversible.

In the end, all you can do as a female gamer is laugh it off. I'm sure male gamers have an easier time with it.

But Japan is so lienient on these things, it was (and still is) a widely accepted viewpoint and reflection of the culture itself.

Is it offensive? Yes. Will it stop me from buying games from Kojima? Probably not. Don't forget that in Metal Gear Solid 4 you can wave your controller around during cutscenes with women in them which will cause their breasts to move.

Rofl at dumbass gamer using the word 'feminist' like it's an insult. Go crawl back under your uninformed virgin bridge, knucklehead.

I think exmachina summed up everything I was going to say quite well. It's kind of a shame to see Kojima stoop so low, when the story aspect in games like MGS series is so high quality. The only reason I can really find is that something had to pay the bills those days. Certainly doesn't excuse it or make it okay, just have to sigh and move on.

I wonder if Kojima really does have a next hand in Castlevania: LoS now. The Extras' version of Patrick Stewart and Kojima would get along. Ohohoho...

I'm not sure if I understand the full picture from just looking at the small clips and reading the thread. Are they characterized throughout the game as bad cops or is this just some random element that has nothing to do with that?

If it is the former then I understand and wouldn't have much of a problem if they are reprimanded for it and depicted as bad people. But if it is the latter and is just something you can do with no meaning towards the character development, I would take issue with it.

Only Kojima is credited for the writing of this it seems and there was apparently two animators credited with the job of "Breast Bouncing Supervision". SMH.

Unforgivable? Nah. Seems like an enjoyable game with or without such content. That's pretty lightweight stuff compared to most things from Japan, if anything. >_> It's also nothing strange seeing this come out of a Kojima game, either. Meryl's first butt waggle capture, Sniper Wolf's cleavage, Raiden's naked cartwheels, etc, etc... yeeah.

But if we want to make things fair--give us a game where the men are touchable. Ohoho.~ *Wiggles fingers.*

Compare to the gore and violence you can get from some of those movie back then, a few pixelated animation of molestation isn't really out of line. And if I remember well, There was some sexual tension in MGS 1. Otacon : "You know how meryl giggle her ass!". The best we can say is the guy hormone must have been high at that time and now they gone a bit lower with age.

Those parts are optional, Its up to the player if they want to be perverted, And 'Touch' the woman. What if it had an option to touch a man? Those parts could be easily ignored. It doesn't help with the plot of the game in anyway, I would know since i'm halfway done with the game.

I don't think that should ruin the players focus on the game though, Because the game is interestingly enough for a game that came out nearly 13 years ago before MGS. Besides, MGS has always had its little signs of perversions from Otacon, Or the mags from Metal Gear Online. I'm pretty sure you can make Rose's Boobs jiggle in MGS4. So see? Kojima has always been that way.

Oh, And if that ain't bad then there is also the Metal Gear eyes that came in Metal Gear AC!D 2, where you can look at women in bikinis if I recall.....

The offensive aspect of this isn't how much of the women's body parts are shown. Plenty of games have shown more. What is uniquely offensive and awful about this specifically is the fact that in this case, the game is aware of and makes repetitive reference to the distressing non-consensual aspects of the touching; it portrays the women's reaction as unwilling: the expressions of outrage, the shame, the protests etc.... and yet the game's designers seem to be completely comfortable with depicting this non-consensual interaction as humor and making it into a joke, one that the player can repetitively activate over and over again, eliciting the same protests of outrage and shame from the woman. A true molestation simulator. And very much more offensive than just some random sighting of a Japan-girl who accidentally or intentionally bares her ass in a game.

Wow, I never saw so many prude people at one place lol
It is just a little option and you're making a big deal of it.
    Now that's really ridiculous.

    Paranoia,

Prude? Because people here are objecting to molestation in a game they're prude? No, it's not hardcore porn but it allows players to grope unwilling women for kicks. As Yurodivoy posted what's so upsetting about this - to anyone here over the age of 16 - is that the game shows the women getting upset and embarrassed but allows the player to continue anyway without any consequences.

I understand that you may not think it's a big deal but for women and men who understand that women everywhere in varying degrees live with the constant fear of rape be it a car slowing down behind them here in North America or the gang rapes that women in the Congo have come to accept as a part of life it is a big deal to see this taken so lightheartedly in a video game.

It is one thing that women are consistently sexualized in the media. It's another when they are outright taken advantage of.
