The only action title I own of this genre is Shinobi (PS2), which I really enjoyed despite the difficulty.
Honestly, I've missed a lot in this particular genre, and I think Bayonetta would be the perfect way to jaunt back into games like this. =3 You can't be a 4PP fan without salivating profusely for the release of Bayonetta.

I also have had mixed beliefs on this game, prettyyyy sure now I will get it :D
and as long as all other big name developer types don't bring out some crackers, this could well be game of the year 10!
