I do find it hilarious that right around the time this footage was released, art for the next Tomb Raider game may have been leaked. The reactions to both will be as expected. People will watch this footage and continue to cry out their love and anticipation for Uncharted 2, and, perhaps in the same breath, laugh about how irrelevant and terrible Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series is.

I could go in depth about the influence Tomb Raider has had on video games and how, for its lifespan, people have never taken it seriously all because of a well endowed avatar. But that isn't the point of this post.

The point is to show you this cool new footage and simply state that none of this would exist without Tomb Raider.  Recent Tomb Raider games as well.

With that said, this new footage has certainly made me excited about a game I though was going to be 90% shooter. Well... that might still happen.

I just finished playing the first game so I'm certainly excited about Uncharted 2, though this video doesn't really show me anything new to the series. Minus the two-person switches and levers (wouldn't this game be amazing as a co-op?) I didn't see anything in these sequences that separated it from the first game.

I expect this game to be a slightly more polished version of the first game. Which isn't bad at all.

Regarding Tomb Raider: I do agree that this game and countless other 3rd person platformers wouldn't be nearly as good without Tomb Raider's infuence. That series, for a long time, advanced the entire genre on it's own. It's the first game I can remember that mixed puzzle, adventure, and shooting with positive results.

I was a bit worried with all the footage showing urban environments and plentiful shooting sections. Really refreshing to see it still seems to have the whole Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones vibes in there :)

As for Tomb Raider, I loved that series though it did start to go downhill somewhat after the original as it became less of an ambiant platforming affair through ancient ruins and more about Lara diving about in even less clothing shooting armed goons on oil rigs or in Area 51, etc.

They were still enjoyable for the most part, but popular opinion kind of warped the focus away to the whole "ooh, Lara" side to the point where with all the movies and similar games people just stopped taking it seriously anymore and kind of shrug it off as some crude game about some overhyped girl.

Personally I really liked Crystal Dynamics reworking of the series with the removal of "tank" controls and the stronger emphasis on some kind of cohesive overarching plot and allowing Lara to have some degree of personality with quite likeable supporting characters.

Tomb Raider was a very influential series and I hope to see more from Crystal Dynamics re-invention of the series. It has some minor bugs at times, and they can be a little short in length, especially Legends but I really did enjoy them.

Tomb Raider's been dead to me for a long time. The last 3 installments I gave a half-hearted attempt, at best, to give CD the benefit of the doubt... but the glimmer of light that Anniversary had shown was completely blocked out by the mess that Underworld left behind. This series has deviated so much from what I used to love about it, that I simply don't care anymore, and I really think Lara herself is to blame.

There's absolutely NO since of danger in this franchise anymore. Lara's mortality is never brought into question, and with each following installment they screw the platforming experience up just a little bit more and with a tendency to leave gameplay unpolished. And probably the biggest problem is that they puzzles have been dumbed done so much that they've just completely lost their charm.

The series needs to drop the acrobatic grandstanding and go for a more ponderous exploration feel before I'll even pick a new one up for a rental. And that's hard for me to say as Tomb Raider is what originally sparked my interest in the genre.

Bwoods, this is going to be coop.
I don't know if the whole coop mode is going to be a whole separate thing or what, but I know it's tied into the single player story.

I would also like to simply state that Tomb Raider would not have existed without Prince of Persia. :)

It's really interesting how they influenced each other.
Original PoP -> Core TR -> Ubisoft PoP -> Crystal Dynamics TR

I've played and finished all the Tomb Raider games bar Chronicles. I'd enjoyed the revamp with Legend and Anniversary. Hell, I even enjoyed certain elements of Angel of Darkness.

But I'd held back off Underworld, the official reviews were good but not so much from the gameplaying public. I put it on the backburner, I enjoy the games but it's not my #1 franchise after all, and kinda left it there.

Thanks to Brad's broadcasts of the game, I'm going to finally pick up a copy and give it a go. So hey, you sold an extra copy at least Brad ;)
