The New 4Player Website: The Games Database
By Bob Webb on September 21st, 2012 (22 comments)
We're back with another preview of the new 4Player site! This week we'll be looking at probably one of our more ambitious projects for managing our content: The Games Database. "WTF is dis shit?" you may be asking yourself, well shut your pie hole and prepare to be educated.
We play and talk about a lot of games and I mean a lot of games. Finding related content on our site, be it articles, reviews, news, podcasts or even our video content can be trying at times. All of the information is there, but it is spread across several pages and has no coherent system behind it. Did 4Player ever play Postal 2 on the feed, or talk about Dishonored on a podcast? Fear not! We've now made it easy for you to find everything we've ever done.
The Game Database provides you with an easy way to browse and search games that 4Player has had some interaction with. You can look up Skyrim and see all of our posts, reviews, podcasts and past broadcasts where we've played Skyrim. Looking at an article about some news on the Dawnguard DLC and want to see other Skyrim related news and reviews? It's nothing but a simple click away.
We've also improved the way you can peruse content by linking related articles together. It's never been easier to organically navigate through the site to find the content you are interested in. This certainly isn't the limit of what we plan to do with this Games Database. We've got some major plans in the future with it regarding new social features of the site and your personal accounts. But that will have to wait for another post.
Note: All of the UI elements are not finalized and is bound to change in the next week and probably throughout the next year. Enjoy! :)

Link / ReplyLove everything I've seen so far. Nothing to complain about really. Nice design, great new features etc. But as a Interaction Designer, I'll probably have more to say once I see it in real-time. ;)
Link / ReplyI need to say this as a huge Souls series fan - there is still a Demons Souls artwork in a Dark Souls review icon! Anyway the design is just great and it looks much more organized. Good work and way to go 4pp!!

Link / ReplyI would just use control f to find the games I wanted to see, but I guess not everyone is as smart as me. Still this is way better!
Link / ReplyI loved the old wiki that school did but words cannot describe how much I'm looking forward to this.
Link / ReplyFantastic, this will make the site and especially the podcast a lot more approachable. Going back and sorting through all of that content will definitely take a lot of time and effort, but I hope you can pull it off.
