U.K. Wii U Launch Prices Announced

At yesterday's Nindendo Wii U conference, the U.S. launch price for Nintendo's new console was revealed to be $299.99 for the basic package, and $349.99 for the deluxe version. That roughly equates to £187 and £217 respectively. Now, U.K. retailers have started to announce their planned launch prices for when the console hits our merry land of tea and cricket on the 30th November. Do the figures line up?

Nope. Not by a long shot.

Anyone buying a Wii U from Amazon.co.uk,  HMV or Sainsbury's can expect to pay £249.99 for the basic bundle and £299.99 for the premium bundle. GAME will be squeezing a little extra out of you, charging £259.99 for the basic bundle and £309.99 for the premium bundle. A premium bundle with ZombiU thrown in will also be available, but I would buy from Sainsbury's if you fancy it, since they will be selling it for £329.99, while GAME will charge £349.99.

To quote Wallace from the Wallace and Gromit short film The Wrong Trousers: "Oh, that's a bit steep! I'll have to let that room out!" Maybe Bayonetta 2 isn't such a strong draw for me to buy the console after all. Unless...y'know...someone wants to just give me money? Please? Don't make me sell my kidney!

So... let me make sure I have a complete understanding of this: The Wii U is sort of a mobile gaming device but you have to be near the Wii which is tethered to the TV so it's really more of a controller but not exactly because it's got all this extra shit on it (like a touch screen) which really just makes it an elaborate controller but they're calling it "next gen" and they're going to charge $150 a pop for them - $300 for a bundle. Is anyone else's butthole sore now?

The WiiU is an entirely new HD console that just happens to have a touch screen on its controller. As a step up from the Wii, the WiiU can not only play the entire library of Wii games, but every peripheral and accessory will also be compatible (wiimotes, nunchuck, etc...). Christ! The thought of them calling that much for a single pad. THAT makes my butthole sore.

I think Nintendo is going to start running into significantly heavier competition from the tablet and cell phone market this coming console generation. Especially if they end up being the low-tier system this generation again. Handheld gaming will probably drop off entirely in favor of cloud gaming within the next decade or so. They may do fine for the next 2 years while they're still building up their library and mainly competing with the PS3 and 360, but 3-5 years down the line it'll probably be a repeat of this past console generation. If there's a big enough disparity in system specs compared to where Microsoft and Sony are heading it will hurt them in the long hall as far as 3rd party development goes. And what happens if we see a huge jump in tech with the Tablet industry? What happens if 3 years from now an average device could conceivably produce content on par with current gen console tech? Whats more, on much more open platforms that are not suffocated by strict vetting processes. It'd dilute the casual audience that they brought into the fold considerably.

Nice try Nintendo. Bayonetta and Mario isn't worth that much. Especially when we have true next gen consoles right around the corner.

Woah there that £299.99 for the deluxe one equates to $486.67. That's almost $500, which is an awfully similar to the launch price of the PS3.

Wonder how heavily shafted the rest of Europe will get. Really looking forward to that 300€+ price point for the base model., along with half-baked bullshit about currency fluctuations, distribution costs, taxes and market conditions.
