Resident Evil 6 Will Be Far Longer Than RE5

Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the producer of Resident Evil 6, has revealed to Playstation Blog  that Resident Evil 6 will be significantly longer than Resident Evil 5. The game will feature three separate storylines, and a "Crossover" system that will seamlessly bring players together in 4 player online co-op.

"It’s quite a lot of volume", Hirabayashi said. "We estimate that each one of these storylines is probably around 70% to 80% of the volume of the whole game in Resident Evil 5. So with three separate storylines, there’s plenty to play here."

This is good news of sorts, but I'm not a believer in the idea that greater quantity equals greater quality, and it wasn't Resident Evil 5's brevity that made me dislike the game. Since it's clear by this point that Capcom aren't aiming to recreate the purist survival horror of the early Resident Evil games, they will have to make Resident Evil 6 a tour de force of over-the-top action gameplay to make it stand out from the crowd. Resident Evil 4's genius lay in the sheer abundance of innovative, successful ideas it brought to the table, and as RE4 creator Shinji Mikami said in an interview with Official Playstation Magazine (via CVG) in 2008: "Resident Evil 6 will have to reinvent the series with another full model change or else it won't be able to keep on going".

    That's good and all but seeing as RE6 is looking like ORC2 to me at this point, I can only hold so much hope for it

    At this point, there better some kind of Giraffe-blowjob easter egg somewhere in this game. As for the length, if its full of action, action, action, and zero pacing. I might lose interest far before I cross the finish line. Hopefully they can win me back but it's not looking likely.

      This. Many people seem to not care about the fact that this series is becoming another generic third person shooter, usually saying "Oh well, but at least there's co-op!" But it strips away everything that made the series unique and stand-out amongst other horror titles. Add the fact that Capcom is taking the story into serious, gruff, and emotional territory over their usual campy and fun storylines is something that's also diminishing the identity the series once had. What's most ironic is that they could've gone towards that story direction easily because the gameplay would've fit the mood. And when I say gameplay, I mean from RE4 and down. Where's the pacing, Capcom? Where is the sense of dread, the fear from being overwhelmed by many enemies while having little resources? Many say that the RE series never was scary, but that's from a psychological standpoint. RE never messes with the player's mind or makes them feel like regular-Joe welps. What made the series a horror game was the survival standpoint and the feeling of overwhelming dread when surrounded by many enemies in an encloses space. RE4 optimized this by introducing areas with more enemies, a cleaner aiming system with tank controls to keep the suspense even when shooting, and amazing atmosphere and pacing. Now, we have another senseless shooter with zombies. Never seen that before. I'm starting to get used to seeing my favorite franchises evolve into other genres instead of improving upon their unique qualities in their past installments. I wouldn't be surprised that eventually every game out there is from the exact same genre and look the exactly the same. tl;dr: RE's new direction throws away the series' uniqueness, RE was scary because of tension, I'm getting used to seeing good franchises become run-of-the-mill shooters.

    I hope some devs realise that quantity does not always equal quality unfortunately Capcom has failed to realise this with RE6

    Sure it's samey but I like Resident Evil, always have will probably still pick this up (when it is on PC).

    I'm perfectly fine with the direction that Resident Evil is going in. I honestly don't understand these "generic third person shooter" remarks. The series has been evolving but it's always been Resident Evil to me. It's always been about dealing with odds that seem overwhelming regardless of what you're armed with, this has been true for just about every game in the series (including RE4 and RE5). I guess I can sort of see where Nick is coming from in regards to the pacing of Resident Evil 5, but I just don't agree. Part of what makes me remember Resident Evil 5 so fondly is that every section had something crazy going on. Replaying that game, I immediately recognized each section and remembered the crap that was thrown at me. To me, that's Resident Evil. Explaining why I love the story so much is a little more difficult, particularly if you haven't followed every game since the first. This becomes even more difficult since sometimes somewhat important entries are put on different platforms but if you put in the effort to read up on or play games relevant to the long term story, it's complex while remaining entirely coherent and is genuinely interesting.
