The Unfinished Swan is a first person puzzle game developed by Giant Sparrow, a small development company in Southern California. The game came into prominence around mid-2008 with a technology demo video; and then was on display at the Independent Games Festival in early-2009, where the game was selected for the Student Showcase. After that though, few further showings of the game occurred, until recently.
Ian Dallas, the creative director of the game and founder of Giant Sparrow, announced in a posting on the PlayStation Blog that The Unfinished Swan will be coming to the PlayStation Network as well as receiving funding from Sony.
In the game, players use paint to explore a space. The paint splatters reveal the form of objects that otherwise blend together with the rest of the environment in a wash of pure white. The original prototype portrayed a garden, but the trailer shows off what looks to be an entire kingdom to explore. Dallas, in the written piece, says that it will not only be white space throughout though. After wondering what the game should be about, he says the team came to this conclusion:
So we made a game about creating a sense of wonder. Our goal is to give players strange and beautiful experiences they've never had before. We want to give people genuine surprises and then keep on surprising them the whole game. The painting a white world stuff is actually just the first 15 minutes. After that, things get really weird.
The Unfinished Swan will be available "sometime in 2012."
